These OSS Projects Will Be the Next Big Thing Last month at NGINX Sprint 3.0, I hosted a chat on open source ecosystems with three industry experts: Matt Butcher, CEO of Fermyon; Stephen Chin, VP of Developer Relations at JFrog; and Robert Sirchia, Sr. Technical Evangelist at SUSE. Given their brilliant insights, I could not resist a final question, namely: What technology should we pay attention to now because it will be incredibly important in the next three years? WordPress 6.1 Beta 2 Now Available WordPress 6.1 Beta 2 is now available for download and testing. This version of the WordPress software is under development. Please do not install, run, or test this version of WordPress on production or mission-critical websites. Instead, it is recommended that you test Beta 2 on a test server and site.  You can test WordPress 6.1 Beta 2 in three ways: Option 1: Install and activate the WordPress Beta Tester plugin (select the “Bleeding edge” channel and “Beta/RC Only” stream). Option 2: Direct download the Beta 2 version (zip). Option 3: Use the following WP-CLI command: wp core update –version=6.1-beta2 The current target for the final release is November 1, 2022, which is about five weeks away.  Additional information on the 6.1 release cycle is available. Closing a 30 pixel gap between native and web We talk a lot about Progressive Web Apps (PWA) in the context of mobile devices, but they have an enormous potential on desktop operating systems that’s only beginning to materialize. Recently, with many new web capabilities in the Chromium browser engine and UX changes in Microsoft Edge and on Windows, installed desktop web apps are really starting to look and feel like native apps. One remaining gap in how web apps appear on desktop is their ability to create their own title bar experiences. While native apps have been able to display content anywhere in the app window, including in the title bar, installed web apps have been forced to go with the default experience, making them visually different.
