Why Managing WAFs at Scale Requires Centralized Visibility and Configuration Management

2023-01-12 KENNETH 0

Why Managing WAFs at Scale Requires Centralized Visibility and Configuration Management In F5’s The State of Application Strategy in 2022 report, 90% of IT decision makers reported that their organizations manage between 200 and 1,000 apps, up 31% from five years ago. In another survey by Enterprise Strategy Group about how Modern App Security Trends Drive WAAP Adoption (May 2022, available courtesy of F5), the majority of IT decision makers said application security has become more difficult over the past 2 years, with 72% using a WAF to protect their web applications. As organizations continue their digital transformation and web applications continue to proliferate, so too does the need for increased WAF protection. But as with most tools, the more WAFs you have, the harder they are to manage consistently and effectively. The challenges of managing WAFs at scale include: Lack of adequate visibility into application‑layer attack vectors [ more… ]

Observability and Remote Configuration with NGINX Agent

2022-12-23 KENNETH 0

Observability and Remote Configuration with NGINX Agent At NGINX Sprint 2022, we committed to modernizing the way we manage NGINX open source projects and engage with our community. As part of that promise, we announced the upcoming release of NGINX Agent, a daemon that manages individual NGINX deployments as companion software, providing observability and a configuration API. Today we’re proud to follow through on that promise by launching NGINX Agent under the Apache 2 license. At F5 NGINX, our vision is to build an ecosystem that extends into every facet of application management and deployment. NGINX Agent plays a pivotal role in that vision by providing Development and Platform Ops teams with granular controls and added functionality for configuring, monitoring, and managing NGINX instances. What Does NGINX Agent Do? NGINX Agent is a lightweight daemon that can be deployed alongside [ more… ]

Tutorial: High Availability for API Gateways in Multi-Cloud and Hybrid Environments

2022-12-21 KENNETH 0

Tutorial: High Availability for API Gateways in Multi-Cloud and Hybrid Environments Multi‑cloud deployments are here to stay. According to F5’s State of Application Strategy in 2022 report, 77% of enterprises operate applications across multiple clouds. The adoption of multi‑cloud and hybrid architectures unlocks important benefits, like improved efficiency, reduced risk of outages, and avoidance of vendor lock‑in. But these complex architectures also present unique challenges. The software and IT leaders surveyed by F5 named these as their top multi‑cloud challenges: Visibility (45% of respondents) Security (44%) Migrating apps (41%) Optimizing performance (40%) Managing APIs for microservices in multi‑cloud environments is especially complex. Without a holistic API strategy in place, APIs proliferate across public cloud, on‑premises, and edge environments faster than Platform Ops teams can secure and manage them. We call this problem API sprawl and in an earlier post we explained why [ more… ]

NGINX Chats with ChatGPT and Gets Mixed Results from the Hottest Bot du Jour

NGINX Chats with ChatGPT and Gets Mixed Results from the Hottest Bot du Jour In the short time since its debut, ChatGPT has taken the technology world by storm. Created by AI research and deployment company OpenAI, ChatGPT is a browser‑based chatbot that uses OpenAI’s natural language models to learn how to interact with humans in what OpenAI calls a “conversational way”. It can do amazing things, like write songs and even Shakespearean sonnets. Programmers have been blown away by the detail of some responses ChatGPT provided to basic questions. But some clouds have appeared. The Q&A site StackOverflow has temporarily banned responses generated by ChatGPT because too many were incorrect. And some users reported responses that were clearly incorrect or simply made up for oddball and even mainstream questions. We are huge fans of new ways to help our [ more… ]
