What’s new in Build 17123 Introducing High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) in Windows 10 The High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) has arrived for Windows 10 and the Photos app! HEIF is an image container that leverages modern codecs like HEVC to improve quality, compression, and capabilities compared to earlier formats like JPEG, GIF, and PNG. In addition to traditional single images, HEIF supports encoding image sequences, image collections, auxiliary images like alpha or depth maps, live images & video, audio, and HDR for greater contrast. We have heard your feedback that these features and the ability to share photos easily with other platforms is important to you. #ifdef WINDOWS – What is Windows Machine Learning and how to get started With the next release of Windows, developers will be able to evaluate trained machine learning models locally on Windows 10 devices, allowing developers to use pre-trained models within their applications with hardware-accelerated performance by leveraging the device’s CPU or GPU to compute evaluations for both classical Machine Learning algorithms and Deep Learning. Lucas Brodzinski from the Windows Machine Learning team stopped by to demonstrate just how easy it is to get started with pre-trained models by importing them through Visual Studio and writing few lines of code. Windows 10 SDK Preview Build 17115 now available

Windows 10 SDK Preview Build 17115 now available Today, we released a new Windows 10 Preview Build of the SDK to be used in conjunction with Windows 10 Insider Preview (Build 17115 or greater). The Preview SDK Build 17115 contains bug fixes and under development changes to the API surface area. The Preview SDK can be downloaded from developer section on Windows Insider. For feedback and updates to the known issues, please see the developer forum. For new developer feature requests, head over to our Windows Platform UserVoice. Things to note: This build works in conjunction with previously released SDKs and Visual Studio 2017. You can install this SDK and still also continue to submit your apps that target Windows 10 Creators build or earlier to the store. Bringing expressive, performant typography to Microsoft Edge with Variable Fonts For years, rich typography has been the envy of many web designers, who long for the typographic variety, texture, and precision available in print media. Now, with the recent innovations of OpenType Variable Fonts―pioneered in collaboration between Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, Google, and others―and new standards allowing for developers to control font variations in CSS, things are about to change. In this example from our Variable Fonts demo, the Decovar font is animated along an astounding 15 axes using variable fonts. Full support for Variable Fonts (including CSS font-variation-settings and font-optical-sizing) is coming to Microsoft Edge starting with EdgeHTML 17, available to preview in Windows Insider Preview builds as of Build 17120.
