gcab vulnerability

A security issue affects these releases of Ubuntu and its
derivatives:

  • Ubuntu 17.10
  • Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

Summary

gcab could be made to crash or run programs if it opened a specially
crafted file.

    – Microsoft Cabinet file manipulation tool

Details

Richard Hughes discovered that gcab incorrectly handled certain malformed
cabinet files. If a user or automated system were tricked into opening a
specially crafted cabinet file, a remote attacker could use this issue to
cause gcab to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute
arbitrary code.

Update instructions

The problem can be corrected by updating your system to the following
package version:
