From Monolith to Microservices: A Basic Guide to Breaking Silos with NGINX

2020-06-27 KENNETH 0

From Monolith to Microservices: A Basic Guide to Breaking Silos with NGINX Monolithic applications are the backbone of most large organizations. While they drive stable streams of revenue that are critical to keeping businesses running, they are often tied to complex processes and platforms for development, release management, and project management. As a result, these blocks of monolithic system functionality – or silos – represent one of the biggest pain points facing enterprises today. In this post, we share expert advice from Carlos Ponce, former Product Owner at ThermoFisher, on the benefits of breaking away from monolithic applications and the basic steps for transitioning towards microservices with NGINX. Enterprise Monoliths Impede Modern Development As development teams struggle to keep pace with new technology and consumer expectations, monolithic systems have become barriers to innovation and generation of new revenues. “Traditional organizations tend to maintain [ more… ]

Rising Open Source Software Vulnerabilities Require a Modern WAF

2020-06-22 KENNETH 0

Rising Open Source Software Vulnerabilities Require a Modern WAF Today, security has become a crucial part of the development, deployment, and delivery of web applications. We deliver our applications with an ever-increasing velocity that allows us to stay competitive. In a constant process of transformation, we adopt new technologies and methodologies in order to stay agile – often including the latest and greatest open source tooling, components, and application stacks. This velocity enables us to provide what our customers want and need from our applications, but what are the risks of such fast-paced innovation? The Rise of Open Source Vulnerabilities RiskSense, a vulnerability management firm based in Silicon Valley, recently published a study titled “The Dark Reality of Open Source”. The goal was to identify the threats to application security that come from open source products. Alarmingly, the number of [ more… ]

Choosing the Right API Gateway Pattern for Effective API Delivery

2020-06-17 KENNETH 0

Choosing the Right API Gateway Pattern for Effective API Delivery The ProgrammableWeb directory of APIs has been tracking externally available APIs since 2005, and the count passed the 22,000 mark in June 2019. The number of published APIs increased by nearly 60% in the 4 years leading up to that date, demonstrating that the API economy is not only growing strong – it’s here to stay. APIs are core to many businesses, delivering enormous value and revenue. Now, more than ever, IT organizations need a way to manage and control access to their APIs if they want to stay ahead of the curve. The Importance of API Management As organizations have started to transition away from monolithic applications towards microservices‑based apps, they have also realized that APIs not only facilitate efficient digital communication, but can also be a source of new revenue. For example, Salesforce.com generates [ more… ]

3 Tips for a CEO Going Through an Acquisition

2020-06-16 KENNETH 0

3 Tips for a CEO Going Through an Acquisition NGINX recently celebrated the one‑year anniversary of its acquisition by F5. I’ve been part of or witnessed quite a few acquisitions in my career, and I can honestly say this has been the best. Sure, there are always some bumps and lumps as you integrate two distinct groups of employees, several physical locations, and hundreds of systems and processes. But we never lost focus on the customer, the market opportunity, and the advantages each company brought to the table. I commend F5’s CEO, François Locoh-Donou, for his vision and stewardship throughout the process. And as with any anniversary, it’s a great time to reflect. On this anniversary I found myself asking two questions. If we could do it all over again, would we? And what would be my advice for entrepreneurs [ more… ]

Introducing a Technology Preview of NGINX Support for QUIC and HTTP/3

2020-06-11 KENNETH 0

Introducing a Technology Preview of NGINX Support for QUIC and HTTP/3 We are pleased to announce the technology preview of QUIC+HTTP/3 for NGINX at a special open source repository. This is pre‑release software, based on the IETF QUIC draft and is maintained in a development branch, isolated from the stable and mainline branches. The release is the culmination of several months of initial development, and is now ready for interoperability testing, feedback, and code contributions. A demo site enabled with the NGINX QUIC+HTTP/3 implementation is available at https://quic.nginx.org/. Understanding HTTP/3 In this fast‑paced world, the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) has been a remarkably stable constant for over two decades. The HTTP/1.1 standard was published in 1999 and has become the ubiquitous transport protocol for web applications and APIs. The protocol remained the same over the next 21 years despite the huge changes [ more… ]
